๐ What causes it
Type 1: the immune system destroys insulin-producing cells (needs insulin lifelong). Type 2: the body becomes resistant to insulin โ strongly linked to weight, inactivity and family history. Gestational diabetes appears during pregnancy.
โ ๏ธ Key symptoms
- Excessive thirst and frequent urination
- Unintended weight loss
- Blurry vision and slow-healing wounds
- Fatigue and recurring infections
๐ Treatment
Type 1: insulin. Type 2: lifestyle (diet, movement, weight) plus metformin and other medicines as needed. Regular blood sugar checks, foot care and eye exams are essential. Untreated diabetes damages heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.
๐ก๏ธ Prevention
Type 2 largely preventable: healthy weight, regular activity, fibre-rich diet, limit sugary drinks, get screened if you have risk factors (family history, age, overweight).
