โ๏ธ Weight Loss Myths: What Science Actually Says
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Myth 1: "Detox teas and cleanses flush fat." Your liver and kidneys detox constantly โ no tea can "flush" fat. Most detox teas are laxatives (water loss + a lighter scale for a day) and some are dangerous. Truth: sustainable fat loss is a calorie deficit over months.
Myth 2: "Eat less and you'll lose more." Extreme restriction triggers hunger hormones (ghrelin rises), slows metabolism and causes muscle loss โ then rebound. Truth: a modest deficit (300-500 kcal/day) with adequate protein preserves muscle and keeps the weight off.
Myth 3: "Carbs make you fat." No single macronutrient makes you fat โ excess calories do. Populations eating rice and whole grains are not fat; populations eating ultra-processed food are. Truth: choose whole carbs, control portions.
Myth 4: "Eating after 6pm causes weight gain." Total daily calories matter more than the clock. Late-night snacking often adds calories โ but the time itself isn't magic. Truth: eat when hungry, stop when full, and skip the 11pm biscuit habit.
Myth 5: "Spot reduction โ do crunches to lose belly fat." You cannot choose where fat leaves. Truth: overall fat loss shrinks the belly last (genetics decide order); strength training + deficit + sleep are the real belly-fat tools.
Myth 6: "Fat-burning supplements work." Caffeine gives a tiny edge; most "fat burners" are overpriced stimulants with side effects. Truth: the only proven stack is a deficit + protein + strength training + sleep.
Myth 7: "Skipping meals speeds up weight loss." Skipping breakfast often causes overeating later and muscle loss. Intermittent fasting works for SOME people โ but only because it creates a deficit they can sustain. Truth: the best diet is the one you can maintain for years.
The boring truth: lose 0.5-1kg per week, eat 1.2-1.6g protein/kg, strength-train 2-3ร/week, walk daily, sleep 7-9h. If it sounds unglamorous โ that's exactly why it works.
