โ๏ธ Fruits for Weight Loss: Filling, Low-Calorie Choices That Actually Help
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Why fruit helps weight loss: high water + fibre = high volume with low calories. 100g of watermelon is 30 calories; 100g of biscuits is 500. You can eat a full bowl of fruit salad for fewer calories than a small snack.
The best choices (under 60 kcal per 100g): watermelon, melon, strawberries, oranges, grapefruit, peaches, apples, guava. These fill you up for very little energy.
The higher-calorie fruits (portion matters): banana (~90 kcal/100g), mango, grapes, and especially avocado (~160 kcal/100g โ but it's the GOOD fat) and dates (~280 kcal/100g). Enjoy them โ just measure.
The weight-loss pattern: (1) eat fruit WITH protein (apple + peanut butter, berries + Greek yoghurt) โ protein boosts satiety; (2) eat it BEFORE meals โ the fibre reduces how much you eat after; (3) swap dessert for fruit 4-5 nights a week; (4) never drink calories โ juice is the silent saboteur.
Fruit vs fruit juice vs smoothies: whole fruit wins; smoothies sit in between โ blending breaks the fibre and makes over-eating easy (a "healthy" smoothie can be 400+ calories).
The myth: "fruit makes you fat because of sugar" โ the evidence shows people who eat 2-3 servings of fruit daily weigh LESS on average than those who skip it. Sugar from whole fruit comes packaged with fibre, water and volume; sugar from processed food doesn't.
