๐ Fruits for Athletes: Fuel Before, During and After Training
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Before training (fuel): banana is the classic โ quick carbs + potassium, easy to digest 30-60 min before exercise. Dates are a potent pre-run fuel (some ultrarunners eat 2-3 dates mid-race).
During long sessions: for sessions over 90 minutes, small bites of banana or dates (or dried fruit) top up glycogen without heavy digestion. Water, not juice, for hydration.
After training (recovery): watermelon โ its L-citrulline supports blood flow and may reduce next-day muscle soreness; orange/kiwi (vitamin C) help collagen repair; a banana with protein (milk/yoghurt) rebuilds glycogen + muscle.
Night-time recovery: tart cherries are the research favourite โ their anthocyanins have shown reduced muscle soreness and improved sleep in athletes. A small bowl of cherries or unsweetened cherry juice at night.
The anti-cramp angle: potassium + magnesium โ banana, avocado, dates โ plus hydration. Cramps are multifactorial; electrolytes + water + fruit covers the food side.
The full-day pattern: banana pre-training โ orange + water mid-morning โ dates before a long session โ watermelon post-training โ cherries at night. That is a complete, evidence-friendly fruit plan for an active week.
