๐ง Fruit Storage & Freshness: Keep It Ripe Longer, Waste Less
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
The ethylene secret: many fruits emit ethylene gas as they ripen โ and ethylene ripens everything around them. Apples, bananas, tomatoes, melons and avocados are heavy emitters; leafy greens and berries are sensitive to it.
Ripen then refrigerate: stone fruits, avocados, bananas, mangoes, melons ripen best at room temperature โ then move to the fridge ONCE ripe to pause the clock. Refrigerating before ripe = bland, mealy fruit.
Separate the emitters: keep apples, bananas and tomatoes away from berries, grapes and leafy greens. Bananas in a bunch ripen each other โ separate them to slow it down (wrap the stems).
Berries survive longest when: kept dry (wash right before eating, not before storing), in a ventilated container (or the original punnet with a paper towel to absorb moisture).
Cut fruit rules: refrigerate within 2 hours, store in a sealed container, eat within 2-3 days. Cut MELON especially โ it's a known listeria risk (this is a real food-safety rule, not a freshness tip).
Freeze the surplus: ripe bananas โ peel + freeze for smoothies; berries โ freeze flat on a tray then bag; mango/melon โ cubes. Frozen fruit is nutritionally equal to fresh and eliminates waste.
