๐คง Fruit Allergies Explained: Oral Allergy Syndrome, Latex-Fruit Syndrome & What to Do
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Two different things: a TRUE fruit allergy (rare, can be severe โ hives, swelling, breathing trouble) and ORAL ALLERGY SYNDROME (OAS โ common, mild: an itchy/tingly mouth from raw fruit, caused by pollen cross-reactivity).
OAS explained: your immune system reacts to birch/grass/ragweed pollen โ and some fruit proteins mimic those pollens. Birch pollen โ apple, pear, peach, cherry, kiwi, hazelnut. Ragweed โ melon, banana, cucumber. Grass โ melon, tomato, orange. Symptoms are mouth-local and brief.
Latex-fruit syndrome: people allergic to latex often cross-react with banana, avocado, kiwi, papaya, chestnut, and passion fruit โ same proteins. If you have latex allergy, note which fruits tingle and avoid them.
What helps: (1) cooking โ heat destroys the pollen-like proteins, so cooked/baked apple, pear or peach is usually fine; (2) peeling โ many OAS proteins live in the skin; (3) ripe fruit is sometimes gentler; (4) antihistamines for the itch, as advised by a pharmacist.
When it's a REAL emergency (anaphylaxis signs): lip/tongue swelling beyond the mouth, throat tightness, wheezing, dizziness, vomiting, or hives spreading over the body โ use the adrenaline auto-injector if prescribed and call emergency services immediately. OAS never causes these.
The practical rule: mouth-only itching = usually OAS โ cook or peel the fruit. Any symptom beyond the mouth, or any breathing trouble = a true allergy โ see an allergist for testing and carry the plan they give you.
