๐ Exotic Fruits: Dragon Fruit, Jackfruit, Lychee, Starfruit & Friends
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Dragon fruit (pitaya): the Instagram fruit โ mild, slightly sweet, 60% of daily C per cup + prebiotic fibre (feeds gut bacteria) + betalains (antioxidants). Eat with a spoon; pick evenly red/pink skin.
Jackfruit: the world's largest tree fruit โ young green jackfruit is the famous vegan "pulled pork" (neutral, meaty texture); ripe yellow bulbs are sweet with vitamin A + C + B6. Seeds are edible boiled.
Lychee: fragrant, juicy, sweet โ high vitamin C (one lychee โ 7mg). Eat 5-10 as a portion; very sweet, so diabetics go small. Never eat lychees on an empty stomach in large amounts (a known illness in malnourished children in Asia โ a safety footnote worth knowing).
Starfruit (carambola): crisp, tangy, star-shaped โ but carries oxalates: people with kidney disease must AVOID it (it can be toxic when kidneys can't clear it). Healthy kidneys: fine in normal amounts.
Passion fruit: the fibre + polyphenol star โ 1 fruit โ 2g fibre, rich in vitamin A and C, and the seeds add crunch. Halve, scoop, done.
How to try them: start with one new fruit a week, buy ripe (ask the vendor or smell-test), and Google the safe way to cut it. Exotic fruit adds variety โ and variety is the point of "eat the rainbow."
