๐ Fungi: The Kingdom Between Plants and Animals
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
What fungi are: a whole kingdom of organisms โ yeasts, molds, mushrooms โ that absorb food rather than photosynthesise. Genetically, fungi are actually closer to animals than to plants.
The helpful fungi: penicillin comes from the Penicillium mold; yeast ferments bread, beer and wine; mushrooms are food; soil fungi feed plant roots (mycorrhizae). The antibiotic revolution started with a fungus.
Fungal infections: athlete's foot and ringworm (dermatophytes) live on skin and nails; candida causes thrush; and in people with weak immunity, molds like Aspergillus can cause serious lung disease.
Who is at risk: fungal infections turn dangerous mainly when immunity is compromised โ HIV, cancer treatment, transplant drugs, or chronic lung disease. Healthy people usually fight them off or treat them topically.
Antifungals: drugs like fluconazole and terbinafine target fungal cell membranes. Because fungi are similar to human cells, antifungals are trickier than antibiotics โ another reason not to self-treat.
Prevention: keep skin dry (fungi love moisture), don't share towels or shoes, and ventilate damp rooms. Most fungal skin infections are minor and treatable.
