๐ง Why Water Is the Most Important "Medicine" You Take
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
The numbers: your body is ~60% water โ blood is 90%, brain and muscles ~75%, bones 25%. Water carries nutrients, flushes waste, cushions joints, regulates temperature and powers every chemical reaction.
What mild dehydration does (2% body-weight loss): headache, fatigue, poor concentration, dry skin, constipation, and a measurable drop in physical performance. Chronic mild dehydration is linked to kidney stones and urinary infections.
How much you need: a practical formula is ~33ml per kg of body weight (a 70kg person: ~2.3L/day), plus more in heat, training, fever, diarrhoea, pregnancy and breastfeeding (pregnant women need ~2.5-3L). Thirst is a late signal โ check urine colour (pale straw = good).
Best sources: plain water first, but milk, tea, coffee (in moderation), soups, and water-rich foods (cucumber 96%, watermelon 92%, oranges 88%) all count. In hot climates or heavy sweating, add electrolytes โ a pinch of salt and some fruit or ORS.
Signs of serious dehydration (urgent): dizziness when standing, very dark urine, sunken eyes, confusion, rapid pulse, no urine for 8+ hours. Rehydrate with ORS or fluids โ and see a doctor for children or the elderly.
The habit stack: one glass on waking; a bottle on your desk (refill twice); one glass before each meal (also helps portion control); one after exercise. Small, automatic, life-changing.
