๐ด Sleep: The 8-Hour Medicine You Cannot Skip
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
What sleep actually does: during deep sleep your brain flushes waste products (the glymphatic system), memories are consolidated, growth hormone repairs muscle, and immunity is recharged. It is the most underrated medicine on earth.
What chronic short sleep does: 3 nights of poor sleep impair your immune response like a cold; long-term, it raises risk of obesity (hunger hormones rise), type 2 diabetes (insulin sensitivity drops), heart disease, depression and even dementia.
How much: adults 7-9h; teens 8-10h; children 9-13h. Consistency matters as much as duration โ a fixed schedule trains your circadian clock.
Sleep hygiene that actually works: (1) same bedtime and wake time, even weekends; (2) dark, cool (18-20ยฐC), quiet room; (3) no screens 60-90 min before bed (blue light delays melatonin); (4) no caffeine after midday; (5) no alcohol as a "sleep aid" โ it fragments sleep; (6) exercise daily, but not within 2-3h of bed.
The powerful extras: morning sunlight within an hour of waking anchors your clock; a consistent wind-down ritual (reading, stretching, warm shower) trains your brain to switch off; if you can't sleep after 20 min, get up and do something boring in dim light โ don't lie there fighting.
When to see a doctor: loud snoring with gasping (possible sleep apnoea), persistent insomnia for 3+ weeks, excessive daytime sleepiness despite 8h, or restless legs that ruin sleep. These are treatable โ don't just endure them.
The one-liner: if you do nothing else for your health, protect your sleep. Every other habit gets easier when you are rested.
