โ๏ธ History of Homeopathy: Hahnemann, the Law of Similars & the Provings
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
The founder: Samuel Hahnemann (1755-1843), a German physician and chemist, fluent in seven languages and already a successful doctor, grew disillusioned with the brutal medicine of his day โ bloodletting, purging and toxic mercury.
The key moment (1790): Hahnemann tested cinchona bark (a malaria treatment) on himself and developed malaria-like symptoms. He reasoned: "that which causes the symptoms of a disease in a healthy person can cure them in a sick person" โ the Law of Similars ("like cures like").
Provings: Hahnemann and his followers systematically tested dozens of substances on healthy volunteers and recorded every symptom โ these "provings" became the materia medica (the remedy descriptions still used today).
Potentisation (1796-1810): because full doses of substances like arsenic and belladonna are toxic, Hahnemann diluted them โ often beyond the point where any molecule remains โ with vigorous shaking ("succussion") between steps. He called this potentisation.
The Organon (1810): his book Organon of the Medical Art laid out the system: individualised prescribing, minimum doses, and the single remedy. Homeopathy spread across Europe, the US and (especially) India, where it remains widely practised.
The controversy: modern science accepts the "like cures like" idea only in the form of vaccination and immunotherapy (which work by entirely different, well-understood mechanisms). The extreme dilutions contain no measurable active ingredient, and rigorous trials have repeatedly failed to show effects beyond placebo โ though a few individual studies have shown small benefits, and patients often report feeling helped.
Our honest position: we document homeopathy's history and remedies faithfully โ with dilutions, symptom pictures and safety notes โ because millions of people use it and deserve honest information. We also state plainly that the evidence for specific effects is limited and that homeopathy should never replace conventional treatment for serious illness.
