๐คธ Stretching & Flexibility: The Complete Beginner's Guide
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Why it matters: flexibility reduces injury risk, improves posture, eases muscle tension and keeps joints healthy as we age. It is not about touching your toes โ it's about your joints moving through their full range comfortably.
Static vs dynamic: Dynamic (moving stretches โ leg swings, arm circles, walking lunges) belongs BEFORE exercise, to warm up. Static (holding a stretch 20-30s) belongs AFTER exercise or as its own session, when muscles are warm.
The golden rule: stretch to a mild pull, NEVER pain; breathe slowly through the stretch; hold 20-30s and repeat 2-3ร; consistency (daily 10 min) beats occasional 1-hour sessions.
10-minute daily routine: neck tilts ร5/side ยท shoulder rolls ร10 ยท doorway chest stretch 30s/side ยท seated hamstring 30s/side ยท standing quad 30s/side ยท calf stretch 30s/side ยท butterfly 45s ยท child's pose 45s ยท cat-cow ร8.
When to be careful: never bounce (ballistic stretching increases injury risk); avoid deep stretching of a cold muscle; after injury or surgery follow physiotherapy guidance โ over-stretching a healing tissue delays recovery.
One myth: stretching before a run does NOT prevent injury by itself โ combine it with a proper warm-up (5 min easy movement first). And yes, you CAN improve flexibility at any age.
