๐ Common Cat Diseases & Solutions
๐ Last reviewed: August 2026
Feline rhinotracheitis (FVR / cat flu): sneezing, runny eyes/nose, mouth ulcers. Solution: vaccination (FVRCP) from kittenhood; supportive care โ keep eating (warm smelly food), clean eyes, steam helps; isolate from other cats.
Feline calicivirus: similar to FVR with painful mouth ulcers. Solution: same vaccine covers it; soft food, vet for pain relief and fluids if severe.
FIV (feline AIDS): weakens immunity; spread by deep bite wounds (outdoor fights). Solution: keep cats indoors or neutered (reduces fighting); FIV cats live long healthy lives with good care; test before introducing cats.
Feline leukaemia (FeLV): suppresses immunity, causes anaemia/tumours. Solution: vaccine for at-risk cats; test new cats; supportive vet care.
Worms (roundworm, tapeworm): weight loss, dull coat, worms in litter/poo, "scooting". Solution: deworm every 3 months (kittens monthly), flea control (fleas carry tapeworm), vet-approved dewormers.
Fleas: itching, "flea dirt" in fur, allergic dermatitis. Solution: spot-on/topical flea treatments monthly for ALL pets in the house; wash bedding; treat the environment โ fleas live in carpets, not just on the cat.
Urinary tract problems (FLUTD / crystals): straining to urinate, blood in urine, urinating outside the box. URGENT in males โ a blocked urethra is life-threatening within 24-48h. Solution: vet immediately if straining; wet food diet, fresh water, multiple clean litter boxes, reduce stress.
Hairballs: occasional vomiting of hair. Solution: regular brushing, hairball paste or fibre, and see a vet if vomiting is frequent or paired with appetite loss.
Basic cat care: fresh water daily (cats prefer running water), quality food, indoor safety, annual vaccines + vet checks, and NEVER give cats dog medicine (paracetamol/ibuprofen are fatal to cats โ keep all painkillers away).
